Any dog owner would tell you that these animals are kind of addicting. One dog in the family will never be enough. Because of the affectionate and loyal nature, dogs have become the most favored pets of man. After domestication, dogs became the affectionate and loyal pets of man. Even with the long years of association, humans would still be puzzled by some of the habits of these wonderful animals. One of these bizarre behaviors is eating dirt. Why do dogs eat dirt you ask?
It is necessary for a dog owner to know the reasons behind the pet’s partiality to dirt so that the habit can be curbed. Parvovirus is a dreaded canine disease because of its high mortality rate. The Parvovirus is highly contagious as the virus shed by an infected dog through the feces can be transmitted to a dog that eats dirt.
A dog that has the habit of eating dirt can be infested with whipworms. Dogs that have a fondness for eating dirt can die from poisoning if the dirt eaten has poisonous substances. Because of these dangers to the pet’s life, it is very necessary for a dog owner to know why the pet has a partiality for dirt.
Dogs have huge appetites and one that is not given sufficient amount of food can eat dirt to satisfy the gnawing of the stomach. Owners provide the pet with sufficient food thus eating dirt may not be due to the fact that the dog is hungry. Dogs therefore have a natural inclination to ingest not only food but any kind of non-food substances that have no nutritive values. The inclination to eat substances with no nutritional values is called pica. Pica can be associated with a behavioral concern. Dogs are social animals and habitually being left alone can be the reason for the unacceptable behavior. Boredom is one of the reasons why a dog will eat dirt.
Dirt eating may be a sign that the dog’s diet is nutritionally deficient or that the dog has a gastrointestinal concern. Eating indiscretion is a reason why the dogs has stomach upsets. Vitamins and mineral deficiencies would be the outcome of giving the dog poor quality commercial food. Dogs are truly amazing because they possess the ability to discern what is wrong with their systems. The inclination to consume dirt is a dog’s effort to correct the nutritional deficiency that results from a poor quality diet. Needless to say, the dirt eating habit must be curbed because of its dangerous effects. The habit can be a wakeup call for the dog owner to devote more attention to the well being of the pet.
