Aggression can be a difficult problem with which to contend. Not only can it make it difficult to live with your dog, but there can also be safety concerns as well. Getting to the bottom of what is causing aggression in your dog is essential to resolving this problem. When you understand what is causing your dog to be aggressive you will be in a much better position to cure it.

The Signs of Aggression

An aggressive dog can display a variety of different signs. These signs may include growling, snapping, snarling and even biting. If you have a child in the house, these signs of aggression can become even more disturbing.

What Causes Aggression?

It is important to understand that some breeds of dogs are more prone to aggression than others. Even so, there are some factors that can cause aggression in a dog. For example, if a puppy is not properly socialized he may be aggressive when he becomes older. In other instances, a dog may become aggressive if he does not perceive his owner to be the Alpha or ‘leader of the pack.’ A dog that is afraid may also exhibit aggression as a defensive mechanism.

Getting to the root of what is causing your dog to be aggressive is absolutely essential to resolving the problem. Consider what you know about the dog’s background and when he first began to exhibit aggressive signs.

Resolving Aggression

There are many steps that can be taken to resolve aggression in a dog. Obedience training can greatly help with this problem, particularly if the aggression is stemming from the dog’s inability to perceive that his owner is the Alpha within his life. Obedience training can also help in other instances, including assisting with socializing your dog. If the aggression is driven by fear, it is important for your dog to learn that he can trust you to protect him so that he will not have to rely on aggression as a defense mechanism.

Enrolling our dog in an obedience class is an excellent idea, but if you cannot do so or if you simply prefer to handle training on your own, there are a number of great products on the market, including The Complete D.I.Y. Dog Training Package.

Remember that aggression is a problem that can be resolved when you have the right tools at your disposal to help you.
