Deciding to neuter the dog or not is a difficult decision for a dog owner. Neutering is often the option of responsible dog owners that are aware of the tragic plight of stray dogs – of the animals considered as man’s best friends that have to be put to sleep for being homeless. Dog lovers would not hesitate to support the program of minimizing the number of homeless dogs.
To prevent reproduction, the testicles of the dog are surgically removed. But aside from this purpose, neutering is done to give the dog a healthier, a happier and a longer life. Because the testicles are surgically removed, the risk for testicle cancer will be eliminated as well. The hormone level of a neutered dog is controlled thus bad behavior that is associated with mood swings will be controlled as well. Neutering decreases a male dog’s inclination to roam thus the possibility of accidents that can snuff the life of the pet will be lessened.
Many dog owner though cannot decide when to schedule the neutering of the pet . Neutering a dog is surrounded by many myths. Neutering done at an early age is believed to have a significant impact on the personality and physical growth of the pet.
The playful and affectionate nature are some of the reasons why most people would choose to have a dog for a pet thus many owners would not dare neuter the dog at an early age because of the belief that the procedure will make the pet less playful and affectionate. Dog experts assert that these notions regarding neutering are untrue. The dog’s personality and physical development will not be affected if the dog is neutered before it has attained puberty. What is the best age to neuter the dog?
Except for newborn puppies, dogs can be neutered anytime. A pet owner would learn from the breeder the age of the dog but if the pet was obtained from a shelter considering the right age for neutering would not be possible. The neutering procedure can be done on a dog at any age providing the testicles have descended but as the primary reason for neutering is to prevent reproduction, it would be best if the dog is neutered before it has attained sexual maturity. Small dog breeds attain full maturity at six months of age thus at this time a Shih Tzu or some breeds of terriers can already be neutered. Large breeds are best neutered at about 1 year of age as these dogs take longer to attain sexual maturity.
